National Grid Installs Mission Critical Control Rooms, Presentation, Training and Video Conference Rooms
National Grid, located in Northboro, Massachusetts recently completed a highly anticipated facility to centralize the company’s Transmission, Distribution and Gas Operations. National Grid chose HB Communications to help them realize their vision for the facility featuring advanced technology that would meet the needs of its employees for the next 20 years. The year-long project features three mission critical control rooms, as well as 18 presentation, training and video conference rooms.
- Project duration:
- One year
- Featured manufacturer:
- Barco, Christie
The most technologically advanced space in the new National Grid facility is the Transmission Operations Center. The AV system features 24 Barco 80” video wall displays “stitched” together to form a seamless 8’ high by 60’ wide display. This ultra high resolution display (2100x16,800) is over 15X the resolution of a single projected image. This provides the control room operators the ability to monitor the entire electrical transmission system from their consoles. The video wall is flanked by four 65” plasma displays that show additional content such as current local news and weather that affect operations. The brain of the system is a Crestron Digital Media switching and control system that allows the routing of both analog and digital media from workstations to the display wall with a single button push.
In addition to the Transmission Operations Center, the Gas Operations team had a need for a large visual display for their operations team to utilize. In an effort to meet budgetary constraints, HB took a different approach, integrating a seamless, front projection system featuring three Christie 1080p projectors. These 24/7 projectors, feature a dual lamp system that allows critical data to be displayed, 24/7/365 days a year, even if a lamp failure should occur. As with the Transmission system, the switching and control of content is made possible by a simple touch screen control system powered by Crestron.
To complement the technology in these two control centers, National Grid contracted HB Communications to deploy a variety of presentation and video conferencing spaces to allow the employees at National Grid to communicate more effectively with remote offices, vendors and customers. Due in part to the extensive training provided by HB, the AV technology has been quickly adopted and is utilized daily by employees to decrease cost and increase productivity.
